Squash recovery tip: Prepare before the next shot

SQUASH TIP OF THE WEEK · SQUASH RECOVERY TIP
Squash Recovery Tip: Recover before you watch the next shot
A good shot is only half the job. Players often lose their advantage because they stay where they hit the ball and watch the outcome. Recovery creates time, options and a clearer view of the next phase of the rally.
The simple cue
Think: hit, recover, prepare. Move towards a useful central position while keeping enough space to read your opponent and change direction.
Three steps to practise
- Shadow from the T to a back corner, then return under control.
- Add a racket and finish every movement in a balanced ready position.
- In a conditioned rally, score a bonus point whenever good recovery lets you take the next ball early.
The common mistake
Do not sprint blindly to one exact spot. A loose shot needs a more defensive recovery; a tight length may let you move forward and look for the volley.
Take it into match play
Notice whether you are balanced before your opponent strikes. If you are still travelling or turning, simplify the previous movement rather than trying to run faster.
Squash Recovery Tip: what good practice looks like
Keep the first repetitions calm enough to notice balance, contact and recovery. Increase the pressure only while the movement remains repeatable. Quality practice gives you useful feedback: you should be able to explain what changed, why the ball behaved differently and which cue you will use again. Finish with a short conditioned game so the skill has to survive a real decision rather than a predictable feed.
