Padel Lob Tip: Use the lob to turn defence into attack
When opponents control the net, trying to hit through them often gives them another comfortable volley. A well-chosen lob changes the geometry of the point and gives you and your partner time to move forward together.
The simple cue
Prepare early, create space under the ball and use a controlled low-to-high racket path. Aim for height and depth rather than speed. A useful target is beyond the service line but before the back glass.
Three steps to practise
- Start with cooperative feeds from the back and aim for a deep landing zone.
- Progress to two players at the net feeding to two defenders.
- Play the point out after the lob, moving forward only when it has genuinely pushed your opponents back.
The common mistake
Do not admire the shot. If the lob is good enough, move forward with your partner and establish a balanced net position. If it is short, stay organised and prepare to defend the overhead.
Take it into match play
Notice the defenders as the lob travels. If both opponents turn or move behind the ball, advance with your partner. If one remains balanced underneath it, pause and organise for the overhead.
Padel Lob Tip: what good practice looks like
Keep the first repetitions calm enough to notice balance, contact and recovery. Increase the pressure only while the movement remains repeatable. Quality practice gives you useful feedback: you should be able to explain what changed, why the ball behaved differently and which cue you will use again. Finish with a short conditioned game so the skill has to survive a real decision rather than a predictable feed.
